In the last three months, fifteen drivers have been issued fines totalling £8,190 for misusing Blue Badges within the Bromley borough.
In all fifteen cases the badges were used to take advance of parking concessions that the drivers were not entitled to.
Only individuals who have a physical or non-physical disability which affects their mobility are eligible for a Blue Badge.
A Bromley Council spokesperson said that it is “actively targeting blue badge misuse” and are “determined to protect the integrity of the blue badge scheme”.
Eight of the badges used had previously been cancelled when reported stolen, one had been reported as lost, one had been displayed after the badge holder had passed away and one was displayed in the absence of the badge holder.
Three of these cases involved the use of stolen badges and one involved the display of a badge after the holder had passed away.
The other four cases involved vehicle owners who failed to provide information to help identify the driver after a suspected Blue Badge misuse incident.
All fifteen incidents of misuse were issued by local authorities outside of Bromley and only three of the cases involved Bromley residents.
More than 45 prosecutions have already taken place for similar Blue Badge misuse related offences in Bromley during the last year.
Councillor Angela Page, Bromley Council’s Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Enforcement, said: “We are determined to protect the integrity of the Blue Badge scheme, not just for badge holders but other motorists as well.
“If you are tempted to misuse a Blue Badge in our Borough, think again as we are actively targeting Blue Badge misuse and prosecution will follow.
“Our officers have the means to check the validity of badges instantly and if they come across a cancelled badge on display, the matter will be thoroughly investigated with steps taken to prosecute without exception. “If you have a Blue Badge in your possession whereas relative has passed away or that is no longer required or has been found, please do the right thing and return it to the issuing authority as shown on the badge.”
