BEXLEYHEATH commuters have shared their mixed views on the rail strikes which have caused “travel chaos” today.
On Tuesday morning, some passengers at Bexleyheath station said the actions taken by Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers (RMT) will "disrupt" their daily lives.
The News Shopper went to see how many passengers were travelling from Bexleyheath station on the first day of the train strikes.
The only trains running from Bexleyheath station were the London Bridge services which arrived every 30 minutes.
This was scheduled every 16 and 46 minutes past each hour until 5.16pm.
Joe Perry, from Bexley, was among the passengers waiting to travel to London Bridge from Bexleyheath.
Joe said it was “fairly annoying” with the strikes taking place but does understand why it is going ahead.
He explained “It is annoying and worrying as the consequences for passengers are unthinkable of.
“However, I do understand that people are trying to do what is right for them.
“I hope it will all be worth it in the end, and we can all carry on normal without having to worry about travel.”
Commuters over the UK are being advised to work from home and only travel if “absolutely necessary” by National Rail.
The strikes are held by RMT after disputes began over their wages and working conditions.
The nationwide strike started today (June 21) and will continue until Sunday, June 26.
A commuter from Bexleyheath, who was travelling to Lewisham for her weekly shop, said she “absolutely agrees” with the strikes.
She said: “Of course, it’s not nice sitting here and waiting for a train to arrive.”
“However, it is unfair for the train drivers because they do a lot of work.
“They need an answer from the Government, so we can avoid all of this.”
A 60-year-old man, Clive, who lives in Pickford Lane, said the strike action “ruined” his schedule for the week ahead.
He explained: “This has ruined my schedule, I’m usually here most of the week and live nearby.
“The cars are always packed outside the station but it’s literally a ghost town.
“First Covid now this, when will the problems end?
“It’s truly worrying.”
