It is a well-loved tradition to nip out to your local chippy on Good Friday, but we want to make sure we are getting the best for our money.
The tradition stems from Christians refraining from eating flesh meat – such as poultry, beef and pork – on Good Friday after the death of Christ.
Many of us still love to eat fish for dinner on the bank holiday even if it is not for religious reasons.
Dartford has plenty of fish and chip shops to choose from, but which ones would really make your Good Friday super special?
We have gathered together the best fish and chip shops in Dartford according to Google Maps reviews.
The Chippy - 297 Lowfield St, Dartford DA1 1LB
We have to give a shout out to the takeaway which has just been named amongst the best in the UK in the latest annual Fry Awards.
A Google reviewer said: “Everything you want from a British fish and chip shop; very tasty wholesome food, friendly service, clean well-maintained premises, decent sized portions and reasonable prices.”
Fish n Chips - 9 Mead Rd, Dartford DA1 2RH
This one scores a brilliant 4.6 on Google maps. People boast about the great food but also the friendly and welcoming staff. If you have family members that really don’t fancy sticking to tradition and eating fish, there are some other options such as homemade curry, pakoras and lamb samosas.
A reviewer said: “Best described as a community chip shop with a wonderful Indian twist.”
Hippie Chippy Fish Bar - 4 Station Rd, Dartford DA1 3QA
This chip shop is located right in the centre of Crayford town, so it is a great pick if you fancy doing some shopping throughout the day. Apparently, the portions are huge and the fish hangs off the plate due to the size of it.
“We've lived in Dartford for 11 years now and we have yet to find a local chippy better than this one,” said a Google reviewer.
The Sole Plaice – 70 Watchgate, Dartford DA2 7JY
Another fish and chip shop with a brilliant Indian twist. The Sole Plaice is a whopping 4.8 on Google maps and people praise it for the service which is served with a smile. There are lots of alternative options other than fish here too.
A reviewer said: “Been going to this fish and chip shop for as long as I can remember and it's the only place I'll go, 100% recommend, good food and friendly service.”
George's Plaice - 79 St Vincent's Rd, Dartford DA1 1XF
If you want some generous portions and good value for money on Good Friday, this might be the place to go. Apparently, the staff are great at accommodating your requests and remembering regular’s orders.
“We loved the food very much and the staff were super personal and informative.
“We will definitely recommend this restaurant,” reads a Google review.
Captains Chippy - 137 Dartford Rd, Dartford DA1 3EN
Customers really praise the batter for Captains Chippy, which they say is perfectly thin and crispy. A friendly service, good portions, and tasty food makes this an all-rounder that scores a 4.6 on Google.
“Just had a lovely large cod with very thin batter freshly cooked for me with chips, just the way I wanted,” a customer said in a Google review.
J.Coxedge Fish & Chips - 8 Hedge Pl Rd, Dartford, Stone, Greenhithe DA9 9JZ
J.Coxedge Fish and Chips scores a strong 4.7 on Google and many of the reviews very simply just state it’s good! They also sell wet fish, scallops and shellfish if you fancy something a little bit different.
A customer review said: “Great friendly family run shop, good quality food too!
“Still a favourite of ours.”
