A DRAMATIC video shows water bursting from a pipe which has caused temporary traffic restrictions in Greenwich.
The water pipe, which is located at the junction of Greenwich Park Street on Trafalgar Road, is temporarily reducing both directions of traffic into one lane.
Gemma Quelch, who filmed the footage and lives in a flat opposite the works, said she was shocked after seeing the pipe burst which initially started as a small leak.
She told the News Shopper: “I didn’t really think anything of it at the start.
“I woke up to see the water was leaking from the pavement and traffic was gradually building up.
“After the workers turned up trying to fix the problem, it just got worse and one minute I saw it was like a huge fountain.”
Plans to repair the pipe are expected to take place tonight (April 5), according to a spokesperson for Thames Water.
If repairs are then completed, Thames Water will return tomorrow (April 6) to resurface the dug-up section of the road.
The repair works, which are carried out by Thames Water, began on April 3 and will be in place until April 17, according to the Transport for London (TfL) website.
The works may cause possible delays, especially during peak travel times, according to TfL.
The works may also cause delays on other roads including Greenwich Park Street (all directions), Hoskins Street (all directions), Maze Hill, (all directions), Trafalgar Grove (all directions), and Trenchard Street (all directions).
No bus diversions have been put in place as routes remain normal, according to TfL.
The News Shopper has contacted Thames Water for a comment regarding the burst water pipe.
A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “Following the burst on Sunday we’ve been making plans to safely repair the pipe, which we expect to do overnight tonight (Tuesday).
"If we’re able to complete the repairs overnight then we’ll return tomorrow to fill in the hole and resurface the section of road we’ve dug up so the closed lane can be reopened to traffic.
"We’re sorry for the disruption our work is causing.”
