A date has been confirmed by Lewisham council for the reopening of a leisure pool in Deptford.
The Wavelengths leisure pool will reopen to residents on January 9 after a refurbishment worth £800,000.
Lewisham council previously announced that the premises will reopen after a “major renovation”.
The council announced in late June that the existing flumes will need to be removed in order to reopen the pool in a way that is “sustainable”.
The council previously said that removing the flumes will save over £200,000 a year.
The flumes have now been converted into a “shallow” parent and baby pool in the new design.
A Lewisham council spokesperson said access to sports and leisure facilities is a “key priority” towards creating a “healthy future” for residents.
The spokesperson said: “Community access to swimming and other sports and leisure facilities is a key priority for Lewisham council towards creating a healthy and well future for residents.
“The council has made this major financial investment to make sure that the Leisure Pool is improved and fully fit for the 21st century within a Covid environment.”
The work for the pool is funded by the existing leisure budget and the Government section 106 contributions.
Councillor Andre Bourne, cabinet member responsible for leisure centres said: “Our sports and leisure facilities play a vital role in helping our community to stay healthy and well.
“I am pleased we’ve found a way to invest in it and keep it open and fully refurbished for the community.
“By removing the ageing flumes, we have made a much-needed financial saving which means that we can afford to keep the Leisure pool open.”
The council says “inclusivity” and “accessibility” for users has been an important consideration in their new planning.
“The new leisure pool will be running women-only swimming sessions in the new year.
“A sloped entry has been added to make this an ideal pool to help those with disabilities gain access to the water.”
