The Queen Elizabeth II bridge has been closed this afternoon after police were called over "concerns for man's welfare".
Essex Police said they are working to resolve the situation as "quickly and safely" as possible.
The road remains closed from J31 A1306 to J1A A206 (Dartford) and drivers are being urged to avoid the area.
There is a detour in operation through one of the Dartford Tunnels.
Roads policing teams said the bridge is likely to be closed for "some time".
Officers thanked those travelling for their "patience and understanding".

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man on the Dartford Crossing shortly after 2.50pm today (Tuesday 14 September).
"Emergency services attended and are working to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible.
"The road has been closed.
"We are urging drivers to avoid the area and plan their journey.
"We want to thank them for their patience and understanding."
An AA Maps update said: "Bridge closed and delays due to police incident on M25 QE2 Bridge clockwise from J31 A1306 to J1A A206 (Dartford).
"Detour in operation - through one of the Dartford Tunnels.
"All traffic is instead going to run through one of the Dartford Tunnels."
