Lewisham Council has been awarded nearly £70m from the Mayor’s office to build 456 new homes in the borough, including 285 social homes.

The £69,955,000 grant is part of Sadiq Khan’s ‘Homes for Londoners’ programme, which provides funding to councils and housing associations to deliver thousands of affordable homes across the capital.

The funding will be used to deliver new council-led developments in Ladywell and Evelyn, as well as the redevelopment of the Achilles Street Estate in New Cross, following the successful residents’ ballot in favour of estate regeneration in 2019.

It will also support the council’s plans for Thomas’ Lane Yard, which will see up to 40 new social homes built as part of the development in the heart of Catford town centre.

The scheme will also include a new public space with trees, greenery and a children’s play area, as part of the council’s efforts to boost the area's green credentials.

Cllr Paul Bell, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, said: “Tackling the housing crisis and building new social homes for local residents on our housing waiting list is one of the Council’s top priorities.

“We have made fantastic progress delivering new social homes through our Building for Lewisham programme and this funding will enable us to carry on that important work.

“I am grateful to Sadiq Khan, Tom Copley and the Greater London Authority for their support and making this money available to local councils like Lewisham. It will make a real difference to hundreds of lives.”
