The latest case rates have been released for every local authority area in England and in most of them, infections are rising.

Nationally, 182 out of the 315 local areas in England (58 per cent) have seen a rise in cases, and 126 (40 per cent) have seen a fall.

Four were unchanged.

These figures are accurate for the seven days to August 14 – with most recent days excluded for accuracy.

They are compared with a week prior – the seven days to August 7.

The figures are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Although most English areas have seen a rise, just two south east boroughs have seen a fall in cases.

Lewisham’s case rate has risen from 315.7 (964 cases) in the seven days to August 7 to 322.0 (983 cases) in the seven days to August 14.

Nationally, Hull continues to have the highest rate, with 1,629 new cases in the seven days to August 14 – the equivalent of 628.7 per 100,000 people.

This is up from 595.5 in the seven days to August 7.

Sedgemoor in Somerset has the second highest rate, up sharply from 311.1 to 593.0, with 732 new cases.

Mansfield in Nottinghamshire has the third highest rate, up from 507.5 to 542.3, with 593 new cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on August 18 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
