A popular Lewisham pub is planning to establish a brewery in a nearby building to supply itself.
The Fox and Firkin, on Lewisham High Street, is looking to convert the disused ground of floor of light industrial building owned by the business into a micro-brewery.
The unit, located behind the pub on Whitburn Road, would initially supply the business until capacity is increased to a point where relationships with third parties can be explored.
A statement submitted as part of the planning application reads: “The proposal is for the brewery to start small, establishing the process and supplying beer/ale to the Fox & Firkin pub, which is also owned by the applicant under a leasehold.
“Eventually production could be increased as sales permit, allowing the business to grow organically - up to 1850L per week (960hls/annum).
“Relationships with local city farms and other nearby farms are being sought at the moment, and will continue to be explored as and when production increases.
“Initially all produce will be retailed at the Fox & Firkin, but as production increases, third party accounts will be sought locally.”
The brewery will create an estimated four full-time jobs.
"Aromas" produced by the brewing process, which would produce around 400kg of waste grains or hops per week, will be managed by an "internal water spray system" which condenses gases.
The Fox and Firkin is known for its live music scene and expansive beer garden.
