Conservative Party candidate Peter Fortune has been elected to the London Assembly after a resounding win in Bexley and Bromley.

Bexley and Bromley are regarded as Conservative strongholds in London, and Fortune won convincingly as the results were announced on Friday evening (May 7) with 97,966 votes.

His closest rival was second-placed Labour candidate Stef Borella, who won 47,389, the highest ever figures for a Labour candidate in the seat according to Labour sources.

In a trend seen in other parts of the capital, the Green Party beat the Liberal Democrats by clinching third place.

Green candidate Mary Elizabeth Ion won 21,600, with the Lib Dem choice Allan Joseph James Tweddle securing 13,305 votes.

In a video posted online after the results were announced, Fortune said he would work hard to represent Bexley and Bromley in the assembly.

"To the people of Bexley and Bromley, my thanks, and my word that I will serve you with diligence, compassion and positivity," he said.

"Bexley and Bromley is a very special place, and I’m going to fight like hell to keep it that way."

In a tweet, Labour's Borella said:

"Very proud to have increased the @UKLabour vote for the #LondonAssembly election for #Bexley #Bromley 47389 is the best vote ever , thanks to everyone who campaigned and voted #Labour."
