Police have so far seized a single shotgun, a number of air weapons and stolen property from a St Mary Cray traveller site which was subject to a huge armed raid.

In the early hours of Wednesday hundreds of officers, including members of an elite armed unit, smarmed the address on Star Lane.

Searches at the site have been ongoing for more than 24 hours, and officers have so far found a loaded shotgun, 17 air weapons, a rifle, a BB gun, a musket, CS gas, a machete and rounds of ammunition, some homemade.

The air weapons will now be tested to see whether they are design or apated for use with a self-contained gas cartridge system, which is prohibited under the Firearms Act.

Otherwise, they are legal to buy and own, although owners of air weapons of a certain power need to hold a firearms certificate.

A number of caravans and quad bikes on the site have been identified as stolen, and around £112,000 in cash and Class A drugs has also been recovered.

Six men and one woman, ranging from the ages of 22 to 59, were arrested for offences including possession of criminal property, possession of ammunition, handling stolen goods and burglary.

Two people found at the site are being supported by the Met's Modern Slavery Team.

A total of 17 dogs have been seized from the site, some of which have since been confirmed as stolen. Police have since released images of the dogs in an effort to reunite them with their owners.

The operation started as a result of work carried out by the local officers, who launched a proactive operation which led them to identify a series of crimes believed to be carried out by suspects linked to this location.

The raid involved highly trained counter terrorism specialist firearms officers, a dog support unit, specialist search officers, alongside dozens of local officers.

Police confirmed that no shots were fired, although flash bangs which woke nearby residents were used as "distraction technique".

One man thought the army had been called in, while a woman, who did not want to give her name, thought it was an alien visitation.
