A man in his 40s flagged down a police car in Deptford "covered in blood", suffering head injuries on Tuesday.
Police were stopped by the victim on Brookmill Road at 9.15pm, who was rushed to hospital sooner after, where his injuries were assessed as non life changing or life threatening.
A man in his 50s was arrested nearby. He was taken into custody and bailed to return on a date in late April.
Kate Young, 25, who witnessed the aftermath, said: "I was going for a walk and a man completely covered in blood walked round the corner being helped by two women.
"He was quite inebriated and seemed wounded on the head.
"Luckily a police car was passing and was flagged down, he collapsed just as the arrived and officers took over from there."
