EUROSCEPTIC campaigners were out to drum up support for a referendum from shoppers on a high street.

Members of a voluntary pressure group campaigning for the transfer of power from Brussels to the British Parliament set up a stall and handed out leaflets in the centre of Beckenham.

The West Kent Branch of the Democracy Movement collected 220 signatures for its petition asking Gordon Brown for a referendum on the proposed European treaty.

They argue the treaty is the same as a European Constitution.

Seventeen volunteers also collected 199 signatures of support for their organisation.

Honorary branch sectretary Josephine Wilkins, from Sevenoaks, said: "It was a success.

"The people of Beckenham seem to be a cut above most of the other people in west Kent and much better informed about the issues."
