A man who used to drive former heavyweight world champion Lennox Lewis to events has praised the positive impact of the gym where he currently coaches.
The former part-time chauffeur for the man that beat Mike Tyson has worked as a coach and club secretary at Amigo’s Gym in Cotmandene Crescent since its inception three years ago.
"We have had such a big impact," Kerry Cook, 51, proudly told News Shopper.
He explained that the gym is a safe environment for people to get off the streets and to get involved in sport.
Around 25 youngsters, aged from 10 to 28, pack into Amigo’s on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to learn the art of the sweet science.
Children with autism and ADHD are regulars at the gym which is inclusive to anyone wanting to try something new.
The gym is also home to WBO European champion, Archie Sharp who trains there alongside Love Island winner Jack Fincham.
Speaking about the gym's positive impact, Paul added: "One parent came up to me the other week and said what I’ve done for her child has completely changed him.
"He is taking his frustrations out in the gym after he used to spend all night playing the Xbox.
"When he comes here it’s six-o-clock and by 8-o-clock he goes home, has something to eat, has a shower and goes to bed.
"He is now going back to school and learning more. He trusts us."
Paul said youngsters in the gym feel comfortable speaking to coaches about any personal problems and that the boxing environment brings them great enjoyment, particularly on trips.
Amigo’s boxing gym also boasts some young talent, with two members boxing for London and another boxing for England in October in Italy.
