Five leading Bexley charities have each received a share of a whopping £15,000 from recycling reward scheme London Green Points.

London Green Points, launched in 2011, aims to boost engagement in recycling among local people.

Residents are then rewarded with ‘Green Points’ for reducing what they throw away and increasing the amount they recycle.

As well as individual rewards such as gift vouchers, charity donations are awarded to top communities to reward them for their communal efforts.

Residents choose their favourite charity or community project from a shortlist, with the most popular cause receiving the largest share of the donations.

£7,000 was donated to Carer’s Support Bexley on behalf of residents in St Mary’s, who topped the community leader board.

Bexley Mencap received £4,000 while Bexley Women’s Aid received £2,000.

Both Bexley Adolescent Support Service and Bexley SNAP received £1,000.

The donations were presented on behalf of local residents by The Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Brian Bishop who said: "London Green Points is a great way for our residents to contribute to a greener borough by reducing their waste and we’re extremely proud of their recycling efforts.

"Today demonstrates the real difference they are making to some great local causes who work hard in the Borough."

Since the scheme launched in September 2011 and rolled out to all Bexley residents, more than 20,000 residents have signed up.

Residents have also been encouraged and rewarded for taking part in the Council’s #DoItForBexley anti-litter campaign, with over 2,500 residents pledged to pick up at least one piece of plastic litter a week.
