A Dartford radio enthusiast is hoping his new community-led station will act as a "focal point" for residents while the town continues to face major changes.

Reflections Radio aims to provide Dartford residents with a platform to discuss important local issues and share their passions over the airwaves.

However, in order to begin broadcasting the team behind Reflections need to raise £20,000 for vital radio equipment such as a mixing desk and microphones, along with the appropriate broadcasting licences.

Speaking to News Shopper, business owner Luke Hastings believes that a good-quality community radio station is very much missing from Dartford and could provide a much needed link between the community and new, local businesses.

"When you look around, there just isn’t a community radio station in Dartford.

"I’ve seen a lot of changes in the town centre and it’s a key moment right now as there's a lot of development and investment in the area.

"I think a project like this would just be fantastic for Dartford and there’s a lot of good this kind of thing could provide, especially to new start-ups who might find it difficult to advertise," said Luke.

Luke explained that he originally caught the radio bug after getting involved with Miskin Radio, a station based out North Kent College, where he hosts his own weekend business programme.

"The thing that I really observed is how engaged people became with it," he said.

As a community station, Luke envisions a space where curious and eager residents will be able to learn new skills while volunteering with Reflections and have a direct input into the station's content.

It's hoped that by providing opportunities to get involved, it could help the most vulnerable residents who may be suffering from loneliness and isolation.

"Even if nobody has ever been a mixing desk or a broadcasting facility before, they can come in and learn and within a few months, they could be running their own show," said Luke.

Luke and his team have recently kicked off a crowdfunding campaign for Reflections Radio and those wishing to contribute can do so here.
