A failing academy in Bexleyheath slammed for teaching teens primary school maths faces being put under government control unless it improves.

In a letter sent to the Academies Enterprise Trust, who manage Bexleyheath Academy, the National Schools Commissioner Dominic Herrington warned that if there is "no clear improvement" made by next year, the school will have it's funding cut and will be removed from the trust.

In February, News Shopper reported that the academy had been slammed by Ofsted after it had found the school giving out primary school exercises and pupils were partaking in homophobic and racist bullying.

The Commissioners's letter also highlighted some of the school's major failings reported by the inspector, including not being able to provide an acceptable standard of education; failing to provide enough support to pupils where English is their second language; and that students with special educational needs were not making enough progress.

The school was also found to inhibiting staff morale, leading to a high staff turnover rate which ultimately disrupts the children's learning.

The academy has now been ordered to put in place a series of new measures which would hopefully see the positive changes expected in order to avoid a state takeover.

This includes a drafting a school improvement plan, to achieve it's educational targets for the next two years and to also balance it's books for the current and next academic year with regards to it's budget.

If it seem's that this cannot be achieved, the school could be issued with a Termination Warning Notice before facing removal from the Trust.

When asked to comment on the situation the school now find's itself in, a spokeswoman for the Academies Enterprise Trust said: "We were disappointed to receive the 'minded to terminate notice' letter from the DfE for Bexleyheath Academy.

"These notices are procedural and we have every confidence that we are able to make the changes that are needed at the academy."

According to the trust's spokeswoman, an attempt to save the school has already been kickstarted with the appointment of a new overseeing director and a draft improvement scheme submitted to the DfE.

"With this in mind, we appointed David Moody earlier in the year as our Executive Director overseeing our five London academies.

"David has joined us from the Harris Federation, where he established an impressive track record in turning around failing schools.

"As the Principal of Harris Academy Battersea, he transformed the school from being 'inadequate' to not only “outstanding”, but it is now one of the best schools in the country.

"In addition to David’s leadership role, we have put in place a comprehensive support plan for Bexleyheath Academy, addressing a range of areas including assessment, curriculum and behaviour management.

"We proactively shared this plan with the DfE and are also working collaboratively with the London Borough of Bexley.

"We are clear on what needs to be done, and we will be monitoring the plan closely to ensure it delivers," she said.
