A banned driver from Bexley who previously evaded police by dangerously speeding away has been jailed.

Jay Langley, 32, led the police on a high-risk chase in the morning of November 6 2018, after officers from the Met's Roads and Transport Policing command attended his Ellenborough Road address to arrest him for driving whilst disqualified.

Attending officers attempted to stop Langley as they saw him drive out a side road, but he drove off at speed, evading capture.

At one point he careered over the central reservation into the path of an oncoming car, which resulted in a minor collision.

There were no injuries and minimal damage was caused to the other vehicle.

Within a week, officers executed a warrant at Langley's home address and found him inside. He was arrested and charged.

Evidence relating to the offence, including clothing, was seized, as well as a quantity of cannabis.

On Friday, March 29, Langley was found guilty of a number of driving offences and sentenced to one-and-a-half years’ imprisonment at Woolwich Crown Court. He will also be disqualified from driving for three years’ when he is released.

Under Vision Zero, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London's transport network by 2041, the Met has prioritised high-risk offenders – criminals on London’s roads who pose a significant risk to other road users in the course of committing crimes or driving offences in general.

Detective Superintendent Andy Cox, Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “We are committed to identifying, targeting and removing the most dangerous drivers and riders from London’s roads, as part of Vision Zero.

“Langley showed a total disregard for the law, driving a vehicle while disqualified, attempting to evade police, and endangering the lives of other road users.

"Motorists caught driving dangerously face very serious penalties, which may include time in jail, as this result proves. Langley now faces imprisonment followed by a lengthy driving ban.

“We will use every legal tactic open to us to take these offenders off the roads and end their cycle of re-offending.”

Siwan Hayward, Director of Compliance and Policing at Transport for London, said: “Langley is a criminal who posed a serious danger on our roads.

Through the excellent work of the Roads and Transport Policing Command he has been caught and sentenced to time in prison.

"We hope this sends a warning to other drivers who show little regard for the safety of other road users.

“As part of our Vision Zero commitment, we are targeting drivers who pose a serious road danger risk including those who have been repeatedly disqualified from driving or have a record of unsafe driving.

"Taking dangerous drivers like Langley off London’s roads will help to reduce road danger and help to keep law-abiding road users safe.”
