A discontinued bus service in Swanscombe could be making a comeback due to a new deal struck betweeen Arrival and local councillors.

Last November, News Shopper reported how residents were outraged over the loss of the 455 bus which served Milton Road, Manor Road and Bodle Avenue.

However, following a number of meetings between the bus operator Arriva and members of the Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents Association, a deal to adapt the 484 route to re-service these roads, along with Gunn Road, was agreed.

It's expected though that the service will only run to Bluewater and Ebbsfleet International and those looking to go to Dartford will need to change buses.

Previously, the 455 service was cancelled as Arriva claimed that there was a decline in use and it failed to bring in enough money.

However, according to county councillor for Swanscombe and Greenhithe Peter Harman, the updated 484 route will be funded by a subsidy.

"The problem we have is that with bus services, unless they’re busy - the buses lose money.

"I think we get a lot of criticism with regards to public transport in Swanscombe but we think most will be happy to change at Swanscombe or they can change at Bluewater," he said.

He also said that because of a propose subsidy, there would be no extra costs to residents' council tax payments.

Although this proposes to provide a solution to the lack of services within Swanscombe's residential areas, member of the Swancombe Community Action Group and Labour candidate for the area, Claire Pearce, said this is "not enough" and the residents association "is not holding Arriva to account."

"This is great if you want to go to Bluewater, but who does their weekly shopping in Bluewater?

"A bus is needed for those who need to go into Dartford town to see their doctor, do their shopping, meet their friends.

"More than 650 residents signed out previous petition, showing that this is a well-used service.

"My priority is the people of Swanscombe and this is not helping the people at all," she said.

Before the new bus service can be launched, it will need to be first approved by traffic commissioners by law.

A spokesman for Arriva said: "As a company we are constantly listening to our passengers' feedback in order to inform the decisions we make about our services.

"As part of this continuous focus on improvements, and following several requests, we can confirm that we are currently working with residents and local councillors to adapt the 484 service."
