Ahead of the opening of Ikea in Greenwich, managers are encouraging customers to leave their cars at home as residents fear for the increase in traffic.

The new, completely sustainable Ikea opens on Thursday this week (February 7), but what else do you need to know?

Located just off Bugsby Way on the Millennium Way Retail Park, Ikea boasts of amazing transport links and 50 buses every hour.

However, to save the surrounding area, Ikea would prefer it if you didn't bring you car to the store.

Helen Aylett, Ikea Greenwich store manager, said: “As well as encouraging our customers to travel sustainably, all 500 of our new co-workers have fully committed to taking sustainable transport to work.

"We offer all co-workers a discounted travel loan for use on the costs of an annual public transport season ticket, as well as participating in the national Cycle to Work scheme.”

Greenwich Ikea is set to be the company's "leading sustainable store" in the UK, encouraging customers to live with as little waste as possible and reuse items.

Helen continued: "As well as the Tube and rail, the site is served by several bus routes, providing up to 50 buses in each direction every hour and resulting in a bus approximately every 1.5 mins. There will also be 50 bike stands available for customers that choose to cycle.

"We have also partnered with Zedify, a bike courier service, available to anyone that lives within three miles of the store.

"There will also be a minicab service and Hertz electric vehicle van hire, and throughout the first 10 weeks after opening, we will subsidise our home delivery service for anyone living within 40 mins public transport time from the store (£15 instead of £35)."
