Greenwich town centre could get a major revamp under new plans being put forward by the council.
Residents are being asked for feedback on ambitious proposals that would have the town centre’s one-way system scrapped in place of a more pedestrian-friendly high street.
The council wants to create a “liveable neighbourhood”, promoting cycling and walking instead of driving.

The cash for the scheme has been given to the council by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Transport for London.
Under the proposals, Greenwich Church Street and Nelson Road would open up for two-way traffic, and Church Street would have a 20mph limit imposed.
College Approach and King William Walk would then be pedestrianised, with a new cycle track introduced to connect to the proposed cycle superhighway, and a future route planned to connect to Woolwich.
According to the plans: “Routes for general traffic and buses would run more directly through the town centre instead of circling around it.
“Wide direct pedestrian crossings would be provided across all junctions. Priority crossings for people walking will also be provided across the two-way cycle track on College Approach and King William Walk.”

The council said one of the major reasons behind the revamp is to stop so many people driving through the town centre.
“In light of the health crisis caused by London’s toxic air and the obesity crisis caused in part by a lack of physical activity, it is essential that we all consider if there are other more sustainable ways of making our journeys,” the consultation page explains.
“One objective of this project is to increase the appeal of alternative modes of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport to help people reduce their use of private motor vehicles.

“Nevertheless, maintaining an efficient road network for buses and general traffic is important and the project needs to consider this very carefully.”
Residents are being asked to give ideas and comments to the council, which is also planning schemes for the surrounding area of Greenwich – expected in the spring.
