A secondary school in Eltham is set for an expansion to keep up with demand in the borough.

St Thomas More School in Footscray Road has asked Greenwich Council for permission to build a new block of classrooms and a multi-use hall.

The new hall would be available for the community to use on evenings and at weekends, according to planning documents.

If the scheme is approved, the extra classrooms would help the school cater for an extra 150 pupils.

A dozen objections have been submitted by neighbours concerned that more school kids will lead to disruption and traffic pressure.

One neighbour said the school – originally built in 1964 – doesn’t need extra classrooms, and a community hall will bring more parking issues.

Officers at the council say however expanding the school will help meet the demand for secondary places in the area.

According to their report: “Officers acknowledge local resident concerns regarding pressure on parking, safety and local road conditions caused by the School and the anticipation that this could be worsened.

“However, additional car parking spaces and private vehicle facilities such as waiting bays have been proven to encourage private vehicle use which undermines cycling, walking and public transport use.

“It can therefore add to, instead of alleviate, pressure.”

The scheme will be considered at a planning meeting at Woolwich Town Hall on Tuesday, January 8.

Officers have earmarked the plans for approval, but a final decision will be made by councillors on the planning board.
