CHILDREN have come up with a new way to welcome visitors to their school.

All 235 pupils at Midfield Primary School, Grovelands Road, Orpington, drew a self-portrait and 12 were selected to appear on a sign at the entrance to the school.

The children were helped by artist Andrew Minchin, of Park Avenue, Orpington, who is studying graphic art at London College of Communication.

Headteacher Wendy Seeley said: "We all worked really hard to improve the entrance to the school and make it welcoming because it was a bit drab.

"Just after we put the sign up, some Ofsted inspectors commented on it and said it was great.

"We are keen to promote the arts and the pupils will be producing more for the school later in the year."

Welcome appears on the sign in English, Urdu, Turkish, French, Chinese, Polish and Punjabi.
