From the Amazon rainforest to...well Amazon, this Greenwich couple's decision to 'roll the dice' on a new boardgame idea is certainly paying off as it becomes a top seller online.
Natalie Podd, who grew up in Bexley Village, and her partner Ceri Price were trekking through the Amazon when a small game of trivia sparked the idea for their own board game, CONFIDENT? which was recently awarded the Amazon Choice award as a recommended purchase.
The game sees players answer numerical trivia questions within a range and the player who answers correctly within the smallest range wins points.
Ms Podd told News Shopper that the idea for the game came about when her partner asked her a question she couldn't 'confidently' answer while on holiday in Brazil.
"We were in an area where there was no internet or wifi and Ceri asked me what the population of Brazil was and I just answered in a range.
"We obviously couldn't check it but we just kept coming out with questions and answers and seeing who felt like they could answer as small as possible while still being pretty sure we'd get it right.
"Afterwards we just thought, 'oh that would make a good game'," she said.
After being coerced by their friends to turn this into a proper product, the pair decided to double down on the idea and took the game to some board game designers in London for feedback.
After deciding to self-fund the project, both Mr Price and Ms Podd began selling their board game on Amazon in November to rave reviews.
"We're nearly through 50 per cent of our stock already which is pretty incredible. We sold about 200 just over the weekend which was shocking," she said.
However, as successful as CONFIDENT? has been for the young entrepreneurs, both have had to maintain a strict regime of balancing their full-time careers along with being part-time game designers.
"It's meant a lot of late nights and definitely a hit to the social life. It's been a lot of fun but it can be so hard when you're tired from a long day of work and you think, 'right, next job'.
"Working full time by day but then starting a new life as a board game designer by night is something I didn't think I'd be saying this time last year," she joked.
Although the game has seen success, Mrs Podd said that CONFIDENT? will remain as a part-time venture for the couple but are already looking to expand their next order and also exploring new ways to play including app add-ons and even a possible game show.
