A new cycle lane in Orpington is set to move forward after plans were re-jigged again to combat concerns over safety.

Cyclists riding down Crofton Road will get a new lane as councillors are asked to approve plans for new cycling and walking infrastructure.

Over a year since the scheme first emerged, a committee will this week be updated on the revamped proposals following a consultation and several meetings with members of the Crofton Residents Association (CRA).

CRA had concerns over the proposed scheme, despite a council consultation showing 65 per cent of people in favour of making the facility even longer.

The scheme has moved through several drafts, with one version estimating the route would cost about £850k.

Experts have now revised the plans again to bring the costs down and improve the design.

According to a new report: “A revised design was presented to the ward councillors in October, who raised a number of concerns with regard to the design and the scheme cost of £850k.

“As a result of this the scheme has been further revised to remove the proposed cycle facilities between Ormonde Avenue and Crofton Avenue, although improvements to the pedestrian facilities along this section will remain.”

The report explains the cost of the scheme is “expected to be reduced significantly” should the plan be taken forward.

It adds: “Improved cycle and pedestrian facilities, as currently proposed, will remain as a key part of the scheme along the section between Crofton Avenue and Orpington station.

“Because the carriageway width between Crofton Avenue and Orpington station is proposed to be reduced, a lowering of vehicle speeds would be expected which should, also reduce the severity of accidents, thereby improving road safety.”

If the scheme gets the green light from councillors it is thought it will be built by 2020.

Councillors will discuss the application at a meeting on November 20.
