Away from the rush-hour periods when traffic queues into and out of Lewisham, walking along Eltham Road in SE12 can be a daunting experience.
At peak times traffic is fairly slow and calm and probably frustrating for many drivers.
However, during off-peak hours the traffic races along both the bus lane and main carriageway.
Vehicles undertake each other in an apparent race towards the traffic lights at Lee Green.
At other times of the day and night a procession of coaches hurtle into and out of London to and from the port of Dover.
Local resident Wendy Bates, aged 32, said: "The sheer speed of some of these vehicles is frightening at times. I'm constantly aware that there could be an accident at any time and I am amazed I have not seen a serious incident already.
"With a school on Eltham Road and both old and young people using the footpaths on either side of the road, something really should be done to address the speed of traffic along this stretch."
Residents brought this issue up with the local councillors.
Transport for London, which is responsible for the stretch of road, stated there are plans for a refuge' for pedestrians at two new points.
