Mr Fred Carpenter entertained the ladies with the history of the collection of taxes by Customs and Excise in this country since Roman times.
There has always been a need for more money, originally to finance wars, but later incorporating such things as the introduction of income tax in 1799.
Famous people who were employed as customs officials included Geoffrey Chaucer, Dick Whittington and Robert Burns.
