THE social studies group of the North Kent Federation held the Betty Grant Trophy competition for public speaking at Sherad Hall, Court Road, Eltham SE9.
The subject was Heroes and Heroines.
Social study groups of six guilds entered.
The group from Welling Evening's topic was Mary Seacole, a nurse during the Crimean War.
Eltham Park Afternoon spoke about Falklands war veteran Simon Weston and Lord Nelson.
Blackheath Afternoon spoke about Amy Johnson CMB, Eltham Afternoon's topic was William Wilberforce and the abolition of the Slave Trade, and Lee Evening spoke about Odette Churchill.
The adjudicator Patricia Hammond, from the school of dramatic art, was most impressed by the high standard of the presentations and the research and work which had been put in.
It was a most enjoyable and interesting afternoon, appreciated by all.
Lee Evening Guild won The Betty Grant trophy, with Eltham Park Afternoon in second place and Blackheath Afternoon finishing third.
