A Wetherspoons in Brockley is hoping to transform its appearance to provide nine new flats.
The Brockley Barge was built in 1868 and the structure of the building could completely change if Lewisham Council approves the plans.
Developers say the building would remain as a pub with customers having more space.
Wetherspoons want to expand the public area on the first floor and create three new floors at the rear of the pub and above the beer garden for the flats.
A new area for punters on the first floor with access to the terrace is also mentioned in the planning application.
On the second floor of the pub is where toilets and office space for staff would be.
The pub used to be called the Breakspear before JD Wetherspoons took over in the 1990s.
