A Brockley primary school has celebrated its grand re-opening including nine new classrooms, dance studio, cooking suite and roof garden.
Turnham Primary Foundation School first opened its doors 83 years ago, but closed during the Second World War to be used as a fire station.
After re-opening in 1985, management at the school said it was clear it was in desperate need of refurbishment to accommodate growing pupil numbers, and work started on the school two and a half years ago.
Re-opened by sporting inspiration, boxer Anthony Yarde, the pupils of Turnham were said to be “delighted” at the new launch.
The school also recently announced the launch of a Pupil Parliament, which allows students the opportunity to speak up for their community.
Executive head teacher, John Halliwell, said: “Providing the kinds of learning opportunities that empower our pupils to have a say on school-wide issues, and more broadly, on global issues such as the environment is hugely important to us.
“The Pupil Parliament will further enable our pupils to lead on aspects of school life in a meaningful, aspirational way.”
A special performance from the school’s dance troupe who have performed at the Catford Broadway Theatre, was followed by soul singer Ruth Brown, who first made her mark on TV series, The Voice.
