A Bexley MP is embarking on a challenge to raise £2,000 for a south east London-based charity in its tenth year of campaigning.
James Brokenshire, MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup and newly appointed communities secretary, is taking on the 21 Bridges Challenge which will see him walk across London's bridges from Richmond to Tower Bridge for charity For Jimmy.
Mr Brokenshire, who stepped down from his position as Northern Ireland secretary in January following a lung cancer diagnosis, has said the 22 mile challenge will also act as a "milestone" for his recovery.
For Jimmy was set up in memory of Jimmy Mizen, who was stabbed to death in a bakery ten years ago when he was just 16 years old.
Jimmy's parents, Barry and Margaret Mizen, set up the charity in his memory, which promotes forgiveness and works to give young people more options to prevent them from falling into crime.
The charity organises talks and conferences in local schools where street safety can be discussed. It also runs 'Good Hope Cafes' across south-east London, from which all profits go to the charity.
On Mr Brokenshire's JustGiving page, he says he and his wife have "had the privilege to get to know Barry and Margaret Mizen and their lovely family."
He and his wife, Cathy, will be walking the 22 miles on Saturday, May 26.
You can support their fundraising effort on their JustGiving page.
