Dozens of pub-goers had to be evacuated from a Charlton pub and hotel that caught fire last night (June 1).
Police and firefighters were alerted to the blaze as an office in the Angerstein Pub in Woolwich Road went up in flames around 9.30pm.
Sherrie Mills, the licensee owner of the pub and hotel, said: “There was a small fire in my office.
“It’s an electrical fault, some wires touched and arced so it caught fire.”
The fire started spreading smoke throughout the, forcing around 20 people to evacuate the building.
A smoke alarm sounded which helped alert those sleeping above the pub.
Ms Mills said: “In the daylight hours and seeing the damage, thank god everyone gout out safely.
“Our fire alarm was replaced last year and it was worth every penny. Of course we have to have one, we are a hotel.
“We are still open for business so people can still come for drinks.
“Some people decided to leave and go home, I have refunded people who weren’t happy. We did what we had to do.”
Fire crews from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Deptford and Poplar attended the scene and the blaze was put out by 10:30pm. There were no injuries.
