Fortunately no one was in the car at the time of incident, which happened in Woodland Terrace, and no one has been injured.
There have been a number of amusing responses to the hole, not least from the brother of the car's owner, Ghazi Hassan.
Abdul Ahmadzai said there was "nothing I could do" after seeing the car precariously balanced in the early hours of this morning. He subsequently went back to bed.
Mr Ahmadzai said he woke up at 4am. Saw the car. Saw the hole. Went back to sleep. "Nothing I could do" he tells @PA.

Other reactions include this one, from Greenwich and Woolwich MP Matthew Pennycook, who speculated holes opening up in roads wasn't such a problem under the previous Labour government.
Of course, correlation doesn't imply causation but I don't remember this many sinkholes in SE London under the last Labour Government #SE7

Some saw the incident as a metaphor for Charlton Athletic's decline.
Trying to find some witty visual metaphor for Charlton Athletic's decline? Look no more. (hope no one was hurt)#cafc https://t.co/m03QmBhyNY

Meanwhile News Shopper reader Matt Woollett sent us this version of the Charlton hole.
South-east London's various borough police forces have also wasted no time in exchanging banter.
@MPSGreenwich So a hole has appeared and police are looking into it...? (Sorry couldn't resist!)

While this Twitter account suggested the car might be emerging from the depths of hell.
Or is it emerging from hell? #journalism https://t.co/8L4CnPf3vq

And if that is the case, who knows what will happen next.
So another #sinkhole swallowed a car in Greenwich, London. Gotta watch them because you never know what they unleash pic.twitter.com/BfhX0MNbxH
