Editor Andrew Parkes has a number of thoughts every week, here are just five of them.
1. It is not about politics and I am not pretending it is an easy situation, but the fact is we all need to live within our means. I have no problem with the Greeks retiring at whatever age they please or even sitting around enjoying the sunshine rather than working. But what I do have a problem with is slogging my guts out to pay for their excesses. If they refuse to live in the real world then they shouldn’t be in the Euro.
2. Summer’s finally arrived, as I said it would, and people have started wearing beautiful light and bright clothing – excellent, it lifts your soul. So, don’t be an ignorant moron and put your feet all over train seats. All your thoughtlessness does is transfer your filthy footprints on to someone’s freshly pressed linen dress.
3. Maurice Cooper rang me this week saying the one thing he hates about the summer is loud music blaring out from gardens and cars. He said I should include it in my five thoughts. Sorry Mo, but I disagree this time. I love the fact people feel free to play loud music. I just think it shows they’re enjoying themselves and want to share their good spirits with everyone else. Summertime should be party time so don’t start moaning the first time someone cranks up the volume.
4. I have said it before and I will say it again, there is no excuse for urinating in the street. Usually it is some bloke after a lager too many in some back alley. Well this week it was a young lady crouching in the gutter. But, when I asked her why, she was very clear: “there are no public toilets within walking distance”. I must admit to some extent I sympathise with her. Mark my words, we will live to rue the destruction of our public conveniences.
5. And finally, I did tell you several months ago who would win Wimbledon. Well...
