Intrepid staff and volunteers from a south-east London Hospice charity took part in a Mount Snowdon and high ropes challenge earlier this month to raise money for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.

The two-day high ropes experience and escorted hike up the highest peak in Wales at 3560ft, led by qualified mountain leaders, was held over the early mayday bank holiday weekend (2-3 May).

11 adventurers, made up of clinical and non-clinical staff, including the charity’s chief executive Kate Heaps, and a team of volunteers, was led by Bobby McGuane from Beyond Boundaries outdoor adventures, who said: “The whole team encouraged one another when things became challenging, and they gave each other the motivation to keep going.”

“The high ropes course was terrifying,” said Kate. “I did it, despite my absolute fear of heights, because my sponsorship depended on me completing the whole challenge.”

Despite the relentless rain and wind, the team rose to the occasion and completed all the challenges.

The Hospice’s fundraising manager Sarah O’Halloran said: “We were prepared for the poor weather conditions, the rain came down but this added to the sense of achievement when we reached the summit.

“I can’t wait to do it all again!”

Sponsorship is still coming in but the team expect to raise a minimum £1000 for the Hospice, enough to supply the inpatient unit with medicine for five days.
