WORK has began on a zebra crossing to improve pedestrian safety on a busy road.
The crossing, in Main Road, Sutton-at-Hone, is being installed by Kent Highway Services and the works are expected to take around three weeks.
High-friction surfacing to reduce traffic speeds will be put down for 50 metres either side of the crossing and zig-zag road markings on either side will be reduced to allow for parking, following public consultation.
Some of the work will mean a full road closure and this is planned to take place on the evening of March 4 to keep inconvenience to a minimum.
Drivers may also be asked to move their vehicles from the area for periods of time while the kerbs are lowered.
A Kent Highway Services spokesman said: "Drivers going too fast and the volume of traffic have led to a number of crashes involving pedestrian injuries.
"We are putting in the crossing to reduce casualties."
