You don’t have to go to Italy to get a slice of top quality pizza action.
We got a little help from our social media chums to put together a list of the best places to grab a pizza in south east London and north Kent.

Sapore Vero, Beckenham High Street
Small and inconspicuous from the outside, Sapore Vero goes the whole hog inside with a stone oven and delightful Italian waiters. The slow-rise doughs, made in-house, are perfection while they burst with toppings. Its name means ‘real flavour’ and it’s a tag the place lives up to.
Mario’s Pizzeria, Sidcup
One of the most popular restaurants in Sidcup, Mario’s currently ranks as 2nd in the area on TripAdvisor. Janet Roake tweeted us to say: “Mario’s pizza restaurant, Station Road, Sidcup is amazing.”
Pizza 1889, Nugent Retail Park, Orpington
Contain yourselves: this one’s a real unexpected treat. You don’t often get a high quality feed in a car park, but this place is different. An old shipping container has lovingly been given a complete transformation into a baby blue pizza heaven, complete with a custom-made six-foot stone oven which roars to 450 degrees.
Freshness is the buzz word, with dough and rich tomato sauce made fresh on site every day and the pizzas are prepared and cooked while you wait. One of the chefs was even second in the World Pizza-making Championships and came from Italy especially to work at Pizza1889.
Big Red, Church Street, Deptford
If a container in a car park is a weird place for top notch nosh, then what about a red London bus? Because that’s exactly what Big Red in Deptford is. The vintage vehicle has been done up nicely with plenty of whimsy and nostalgia to top off its high class pizzas. Not content with great food, the restaurant also runs live comedy and film screenings.
Pavilion Cafe, Greenwich Park
In a brilliant octagonal building built in 1906 on the top of the hill by the Royal Observatory, the Pavilion serves up a whole range of goodies but it is the fresh, stone-baked pizzas which caught our readers’ eyes.
Sodo, Honor Oak Park
With sister restaurants in Clapton and Hoxton, Sodo is dead trendy as well as serving up a tasty slice. The hip restaurant, which specialises in sourdough pizzas, serves a slim but well-chosen menu plus daily specials and a selection of craft beers and chooses the best local ingredients. It was highly regarded on Twitter. Responding to our shout-out for nominations, Honor Oak WI said: “Sodo in Honor Oak Park!” Jane Martin added: “I second that one! Great pizzas.”
Jamie’s Italian, Bluewater/Greenwich
OK, calm down. It may be a big chain and there are lots of good chains offering tasty pizzas but Jamie’s is a cracking restaurant and the food’s all prepared fresh where you can see it.
