Pioneering technology allowing everyday objects like street lamps to be remotely controlled via the internet is to be launched in Greenwich.
Dubbed the "internet of things" the technology enables objects like street lamps and underground water pipes to be interacted with remotely and in theory, would cut costs to the public purse.
Leader of Greenwich Council Councillor Denise Hyland said: "This kind of technology can be life-transforming and could influence how everyday services and experiences are delivered – from controlling traffic systems to street lighting, parking systems and service, waste collection levels
"A lot of these are the essential services local authorities provide and for us to be at the forefront of developing new applications and uses for this new technology is extremely exciting."
The technology is currently being rolled out across the UK and will be in use in Greenwich next year.
