A Sidcup judo coach has been named as London's Sports Unsung Hero 2014.

Dave Dunsford, manager and senior coach of United Judo, based in Sydney Road was handed the accolade after being nominated by a student's mum.

The 57-year-old from Welling, who has been practising judo since he was nine-years-old and qualified as a coach 10 years later, had no idea he had won the award until it was presented to him.

He added: "I was told they were coming to do a bit of filming because I had been short listed.

"A couple of lads I used to teach when they were younger came down and I asked for a picture with them and was told I had won the award - I couldn't take it in."

The beloved coach will now go forward for the national award, which will be presented at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event in Glasgow on December 14.
