Bromley Mum of 2, Sarah Morgan, has launched an appeal to save lives in India from Tuberculosis (TB) by providing volunteer health workers with motorbikes.
TB is not as a disease of the past; it will kill nearly 1.5 million people this year, more than malaria, but TB is preventable and curable. India has the world’s highest TB burden; around 1,000 people die there of this curable disease every day.
Sarah has just taken over as chair of the Charity Target TB and lives in Coney Hall, West Wickham. Sarah explains ‘ we have over 800 trained volunteers in India, mainly women, who provide lifesaving work finding and taking people with TB symptoms to hospital. There is no affordable public transport in this rural part of India so they do this all on foot. But with a motorbike they can see more patients each day, and reach more people with information to prevent TB’. Each motorbike costs £710 including all running costs for one year. Sarah has got local people in Coney Hall involved, including the pre church, church and school fair, to try and raise enough for at least one motorbike by World TB day in March 2015.
Sarah adds ‘We are very excited that the Rotaract Club of have also pledged to raise money for a motorbike and I would love for more Bromley people, clubs and organisations to get involved in this great cause.’ Details of Coney Hall events are online www.facebook.com/ConeyHallTBmotorbi Please donate at www.justgiving.com/ConeyHallTBmotorbike Sarah can be contacted at smorganchair@targettb.org.uk Target TB is a Registered charity, number 1098752. www.targettb.org.uk Based on information supplied by Sarah Morgan.
