A well-known Erith Arsenal fan has been found dead in Plumstead.

Steve Thompson, aged 46, was reportedly a regular at Erith Working Mens’ Club and North Heath Social Club.

The Arsenal supporter was better known as Steve ‘Gooner’ after his favourite team.

He is said to have visited The Ship in West Street, Erith, on the night of November 22 to watch Arsenal play Manchester United.

It is thought he then met friends and travelled to Plumstead.

At 10.20am the following day he was found collapsed in the stairwell of a property in Plumstead High Street.

Police and paramedics were called but Mr Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Jane Ellison is a friend of the pool team Mr Thompson played for, The Village Inn in Belvedere, and says she has known him for more than 10 years.

The district nurse told News Shopper: "He was one of those fellas who always high-fived everyone.

"He was always cracking jokes and one-liners.

"He was a funny character and he wouldn’t harm anybody.

"Gooner will be loved and missed by all the pool team."

Debbie Smart is assistant manager at Erith Working Mens’ Club in Valley Road.

She said: “He used to come in every Sunday with his bowls team and every Monday to play snooker.

“He was a friendly chap. He used to help out collecting the glasses and was always willing to lend a hand if the girls were busy behind the bar.”

Another acquaintance, who did not wish to be named, said: “He was lovely and I can’t say a bad word about him.

“He was a nice man and he never hurt anybody."
