"I think it's been a really strong year for cinema," ITV's The Movie Show film critic James King tells News Shopper.
He is discussing Cineworld's unmissables survey, which asked cinemagoers their thoughts on the must-see films of 2014, and which of next year's releases they are most excited about.
Coming up trumps in the must-see department was 12 Years A Slave - which starred former Dulwich College student Chiwetel Ejiofor, was directed by Goldsmiths graduate Steve McQueen and won the Best Picture Oscar back in February.
It was followed by another awards favourite, Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, and in third place the unexpected smash hit of the summer, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
Former Radio One resident film critic, James said: "(The survey) said that the most unmissable film of 2014 was 12 Years A Slave, so kind of going with the Oscar voters actually.
"After 12 Years A Slave, which ultimately is an uplifting film but is also a very harrowing and serious film, the second most unmissable film was The Wolf of Wall Street, which I suppose was harrowing in its own way but was more of a warped comedy, and then Guardians of the Galaxy at three which was the big summer blockbuster.
"I really liked Guardians of the Galaxy, I was really pleased to see that at number three and I think that surprised a lot of people.
"I think people really responded to the humour of it and the lightness of it. It's a fun movie to watch, lots of people were referring to Star Wars when they saw it and said it reminds us of the old Star Wars movies - we've certainly been missing that for a while."
Talking of Star Wars, according to the survey, the film people are most excited about in 2015 is the seventh film in the Star Wars saga, recently named The Force Awakens.
Directed by Star Trek helmer JJ Abrams, the film has assembled a cast of lesser known youngsters, including Brits Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, alongside the stars of the original trilogy, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. It's out in December next year.
Second place on the most anticipated list was 50 Shades of Grey, the adaptation of EL James' notorious and hugely popular novel directed by Goldsmiths graduate Sam Taylor-Johnson, the second trailer for which has just been released.
James said: "50 Shades of Grey, which is the second on the survey, I haven't read the book and I am just intrigued to find out what all the fuss is about.
"The first trailer has been online for a while and it has got a record amount of views, and people are going absolutely crazy. This comes out Valentine’s Day next year, so the anticipation for that movie is huge.”
