Bromley Council's leader has voiced his opinion on plans to transform the Crystal Palace National Sport Centre (NSC).

Councillor Stephen Carr has joined the Crystal Palace Park Community Stakeholder Group (CSG) in welcoming the decision to extend the consultation period, until November 16.

However, they are worried the plans - which include building a two-form primary school - may be inappropriate for the park.

Four options have been presented by the Greater London Authority (GLA), which have been a disappointment all round, with Cllr Carr describing the choices as "variations of one option" and that this "option does not immediately appear to be the ambitious and interesting scheme expected."

The possible loss of athletic facilities is also a concern, with Martin Tempia, Chair of the Crystal Palace Park Community Stakeholder Group, saying: "We are concerned that insufficient recognition has been given to the importance the NSC athletics track has."

This sentiment is mirrored by Cllr Carr, who added: "The sports facilities are important to the local community and every effort should be made to retain them."

The main concerns remain of how plans for the NSC fit in with the rest of the park.

Cllr Carr, on behalf of the council, also stressed that the proposals impact on the Crystal Palace Improvement Scheme, which is being funded by both Bromley Council and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

There are fears that £425,000, the estimated cost of the project, could be wasted if reversed in the near future.
