Celebrity Mathematician Johnny Ball, and charity ‘Mayor’s Fund for London’ hosted the first ever London ‘Count on Us’ maths challenge final.

Thirteen primary schools from across the capital competed against each other using the 24®game having beaten 40 other primary schools across London to get this far.

The winners announced at 12noon were Kender Primary School from Lewisham and the team Azeezat Uushff (age 10) Stephen Odeleye (age 10) and Paul Adea (age 10) were whisked off to join London Mayor, Boris Johnson and former New York Mayor, Rudy Giuliani for lunch at London’s Tower 42, where they will challenge Boris Johnson to the 24®game*.

During the exclusive, fundraising event and auction for 250 VIP guests, money is being raised to help fund Mayor’s Fund for London projects including expanding numeracy programmes in deprived areas of London.

All finalists received a certificate from The Mayor of London Boris Johnson and a medal for taking part having been entertained by Johnny Ball live in the Assembly Rooms at City Hall.

The challenge is part of the charity's wider numeracy programme aimed at motivating 3,000 children in more than 150 London primary schools over the next 3 years.

One in five children leave primary school without achieving the expected level in maths, limiting their chances of getting a decent job. Innumerate adults are twice as likely to be unemployed and five times more likely to achieve no qualifications by the age of 34.
