Greenwich Council says it will spend £5m on a scheme to create around 100 jobs repairing the borough's roads.

The plan will see people taken on to help improve the 100 roads most in need of repair.

They will be contracted to carry out road repairs for four days a week and can access help and advice on writing CVs, job interviews and filling out job applications on the fifth day.

Each will start on a six-month contract, learning skills like laying paving, repairing potholes and putting up street signs.

Cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Danny Thorpe said: "We are really proud of this scheme which the whole borough will benefit from.

"It means we will make big improvements to many of our local roads, going above and beyond the repair programme already in place."

Places - some already filled through the council's job GLLaB agency - are open to borough residents who are currently unemployed.
