England were dumped out of the World Cup in record time but there's no need for patriotic football fans to fear - Lewisham's youngsters are heading to Brazil.

The borough's under-11 team have triumphed in the national final of the Danone Nations Cup - the world's biggest football tournament for 10 to 12-year-olds.

Lewisham PSFA (Primary Schools’ Football Association) won in a competition which saw 3,000 teams from across the country take part.

After impressing in the semi-finals by beating Liverpool 3-0, the talented youngsters were crowned national champions with a final victory over Dacorum SFA.

And their victory will see them meet football legend Zinedine Zidane when they travel to the world final in Sao Paolo to represent England this November.

Former Tottenham, Liverpool and England centre back John Scales, an ambassador of the tournament, said: "I would like to congratulate Lewisham PSFA for their stellar performance at the national final, they played extremely well and I’m sure the opportunity to represent England in the World Final in Brazil is a dream come true.

And the future looks bright for the Lewisham players. Previous participants include Manchester United and England centre back Phil Jones, QPR winger Junior Hoilett, recent Tottenham signing Erik Lamela and Aston Villa’s Andreas Weimann.
