Two Bromley schoolboys have sailed their way to gold in a London-wide regatta - despite competing with a broken rudder.
Barnaby Marchant, 11, from Colfe's School, and 15-year-old Charles Darwin pupil Reece Clark, beat representatives from 26 London boroughs over two days at the London Youth Games in Enfield.
They had only sailed together once before, and lost the use their rudder halfway through their third race.
Barnaby said: "The race was very close - there was half a second between us and second position and we couldn’t believe it when the rudder broke.
"That’s the thing about sailing, anything can happen.
"I just had to get on the back of the boat, rock it and lean furiously then hang off the stern and steer the rudder directly."
Reece’s mother, Caroline Clark, added: "At the end of the third race, they returned to the pontoon for repairs, where we found out that they had actually come first with no steering which was an incredible achievement.
"We are so incredibly proud of them and of course Reece and Barnaby are delighted."
