South east London looks like the place to be this summer with the opening of a trendy new street food venue in a disused Lewisham market.
Model Market, which has opened on the old 1950s Lewisham High Street site, saw punters queue around the block to get in for its opening weekend.
Organisers Street Feast - who run a similar project in east London hipster hotspot Dalston - estimated that 2,000 people crammed in on Saturday night alone to dine on street food, listen to music and drink cocktails at the brightly lit venue.
Another 1,800 came to the opening night on Friday.
There was a marked increase in the number of skinny jeans-clad hipsters in SE13, but traders said there were a wide variety of people coming along to sample the goods.
Organiser Jonathan Downey said: "We were overwhelmed with the response to the re-opening of Model Market and can't wait until next weekend.
"There was a real carnival and community atmosphere with people of all ages enjoying the rum, buns and sunshine.
"A lot of people worked very hard to create such a unique and vibrant space and it was very rewarding to see it wholeheartedly embraced by so many locals."
Model Market runs for 15 Fridays and Saturdays until September 27.
Recognition of cool Lewisham or gentrification? How the web reacted.
The people who went along to Model Market had a whale of a time, giving it rave reviews and, of course, instagramming pictures of their food.
Many saw it as a long-delayed recognition of Lewisham's cool credentials:
BREAKING NEWS: Lewisham is cooler than Peckham. #Official 😉

Others were bowled over by the place:

There were some rather odd claims...
Tonight was a game changer - street food as an agent of social change -- in Lewisham. @StreetFeastLDN #ModelMarket pic.twitter.com/sEUkbQWnxI

Lewisham differences (cf Dalston): Well better hats but worse hair. Hardly any beards. No skinny jeans. More proper London, fewer tourists.

But some people were more cynical:
Model Market and a new burger joint on Lee High Road. Lewisham finally grows a pair. Of skinnyfit jeans. Heady days.
