England may be on the World Cup brink, but early elimination could actually be good news for some fans – at least financially.

If England fail dismally to get out of the group stage, fans lucky (or unlucky) enough to have flown to Brazil to watch the debacle may be saved from forking out another £8,000.

Research has found the total cost of following Roy’s boys through every moment of the tournament to the final would be £13,360.81.

The amount is based on the pie-in-the-sky idea of being able to be at all seven matches en route to the final in Rio on July 13, including match tickets, flights, hotels, taxis between airports, accommodation and stadiums, as well as a basic food and drink budget.

The cost of being at all the group matches in the flesh is put at a mere £5,257.71.

The study also shows if England were to lift the World Cup, any fan who had travelled across the country for every stage will have clocked up 22,411 miles in the process.
