Two fire crews were called to a car fire in York Road, Gravesend on Sunday night.
The blaze, which happened at 11.25pm, was not suspicious and is believed to have been caused by an engine failure in the BMW MR3.
A spokesman for Thames-side fire station said: "The young man from Bean was pretty shocked.
"He smelt some burning coming from the car and after lifting the engine, the oxygen ignited and it was pretty well alight when we arrived.
"The whole of the engine was destroyed and the majority of the car as well."
The crews were at the scene for 40 minutes bringing the fire under control.
